Budget Beauty Pick

Budget Pick of the Month: Paul Smith Rose Eau de Parfum

Paul Smith Rose is an elegant, sofisticated, natural smelling rose scent. If this rose had a color it would be light pink. This flower would have been picked in a classic English garden like the rose on the photograph. The photograph was taken in the famous Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent. Sissinghurst Castle Garden was created by the writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband. Vita Sackville-West is generally known as well for her relationship with writer Virginia Woolf.

There is not really an interesting story to Paul Smith Rose in contrast to the life story of Vita Sackville-West. Virginia Woolf was inspired by Vita’s life to write the novel Orlando, made into a movie in 1992 with Tilda Swinton as Orlando. Paul Smith presumably had Rose created for his wife.

Paul Smith Rose is a very natural uncomplicated quite linear scent. On my skin it smells in the beginning like rose lemonade. Giving the impression of a fresh, light pink rose with some dew on its petals. On paper I clearly smelled the tea note in the beginning but I could not smell this on my skin at all. After a few minutes Rose develops on my skin into a slightly warmer red velvet rose.

I have been testing different natural rose oils lately and interestingly some of them do not smell the way you would expect a rose to scent. But this Rose eau de parfum really smells like a natural rose. It is best used sprayed lavishly.

Paul Smith Rose is not an Eau de Parfum I would recommend to anyone who does not like the scent of rose. But I have found reviews online from people who did not like rose scents in general and like this Paul Smith Rose scent.

Do not be put off by its boring name or uninterestng bottle as the fragrance Paul Smith Rose is really worth a try. It would make an excellent gift to a lover of rose scents and for its price it is an absolute bargain.

RHS Bronnley Rose Hand Lotion Budget Beauty Pick Review

Esperessence Pink Rose

RHS Bronnley Rose Hand Lotion is a light hand lotion with the scent of natural rose. Bronnley England made a line of rose scented body products several years ago, in cooperation with the British Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The hand lotion is one of the rose line. This line also has a shower gel, body lotion, soap in a beautiful tin and dusting body powder. The hand lotion bottle has a light powdery natural rose scent.

I have bought and used two bottles of this lotions already. It is very suitable to use as a body lotion as it comes with a handy pump. You will not find it to be very nourishing as it is made as a hand lotion. My drier skin absorbs the lotion very quickly, leaving a light pink rose scent on my skin. It is perfect to layer with perfumes as many perfumes have rose as a heart note.*

One 250 ml plastic bottle costs around 15 euro on ebay including shipping to the Netherlands. I have used several rose scented body lotions, like Jurlique and Crabtree & Evelyn but this Bronnley rose hand lotion is my favorite and it is more affordable.

What does natural rose do to you?  The scent of rose is thought to work as an anti depressant and aphrodisiac. It is also said to be relaxing, elevate stress and help with mood swings. (source: J. Peace Rhind Fragrance and Wellbeing)

What is your favorite body lotion? Do you use rose scented body products?

Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Cologne Budget Beauty Pick Perfume Review

Shalimar Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Cologne was not a super bargain but it still comes at a fairly decent price given it quality. It has become one of my most cherished bottles this summer due to its smooth vintage vibe and beautiful older designed spray bottle. My Shalimar edc was produced in 2015. But scenting it, one would say it was in the 80 ties. When my favorite Shalimar Parfum de Toilette was produced. My personal fantasy is that at a Guerlain factory they still had some old juice lying around in a wooden barrel, watered it down a bit and sold it as edc.

On my skin Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Cologne is much smokier than the Shalimar I scented last year at the Guerlain counter in a department store. I find the newer Shalimar’s to be too much watered down and tamed. Although it says Eau de Cologne on its label, the fragrance lasts a whole day on my skin.

If you do not know Shalimar, grab your chance and get this edc bottle while you still can to experience this beautiful fragrance in its full glory. You never know how much more it will be altered by its producing company LVMH, given the financial driven and certainly not perfume loving decisions which are being made lately. If you like and love Shalimar buy this version, you will not regret it.

What does it do? It takes away rough and hard edges due to its balsamic properties acting like balsam for your soul. For me personally it works also comforting and sometimes I wear it to sleep.

How does it make you feel? Like a movie star in the nineteen twenties, with natural glamour and being sexy in an elegant way, like wearing a low cut black satin evening dress and feeling very comfortable and relaxed wearing it.
